Story Behind Rylance Farm Foodservice

Way back in 1970, John Dolman, our founder’s father, began buying potatoes from UK farmers and selling to fish and chip shops across the Midlands. This is where it all began. Through sheer hard work and determination, John was able to use his agricultural knowledge to develop his business and to scrape together enough money by 1987 as a deposit to purchase Rylance Farm, a rundown farm and former Gasworks site in Barton Under Needwood, where we are still located today.
John knew the area well and appreciated the developing demand for warehousing and open storage space, so he began to imagine how the site would look, chalking out lines across the yard area to show where he wanted his buildings. Being the hard working man he was, John worked tirelessly laying the foundations, buying materials and building warehouses to suit his tenants. Rylance became a very busy industrial estate and John took huge pride in what he had created, he could always be seen with a brush keeping the yard in perfect condition. Anybody who had nothing to do would soon find themselves cleaning up with him.
In 1991, with the decline of the UK’s fish and chip market, John and his son Chris began importing par-fried chips from Belgium with plans of supplying pubs. This didn’t go quite as well as planned, but determined to make it work, Chris found the thriving Chinese takeaway market was ready to move away from raw potatoes to use ready-to-cook chips. For 20 years, Q-Mover thrived with a small range of frozen products and a team of 12 supplying takeaways throughout the Midlands.
Chris’s sons, Marvin & Graham, joined the business and identified growth in the Thai restaurant sector. Very quickly we became the UK’s premier Thai restaurant supplier offering a one-stop delivery service covering every product from meat, seafood, produce, ambient ingredients, packaging, drinks and consumables. With almost maximum potential in the Thai market reached, it was time to expand once again. Marvin oversaw the Thai market and Graham began our new project, Rylance Farm Foodservice.
With our experience, resources and a desire to grow in the education, healthcare & hospitality catering sectors, Rylance Farm Foodservice was born. Embracing new technology, along with our hands-on approach, it was a foundation for success. In 2022 we purchased a small produce distributor in Keighley, West Yorkshire to further our knowledge of the these sectors and to increase our distribution range in the north of England. Although this soon appeared to have been a bad decision, we worked day and night to grow the business and consolidate its position in the market. Lessons were learned and successes were celebrated.
Today we stock over 2500 products, serving national, regional and independent caterers throughout the UK, 6 days a week. We continue to work tirelessly as a team to develop the quality foodservice that tomorrow demands and needs.
